Why Do We Focus on Miracles?
1. To convince people that Jesus is the Son of God.
John 2:11 says, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” Jesus had just turned the water into wine at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. At the end of this amazing miracle, the Holy Spirit, through the apostle John, unveiled a life-changing sentence: “…and his disciples believed on him.” The original disciples of Christ’s faith were strengthened because of the miracles that Jesus performed.
2. To confirm the truth of God’s Word.
Mark 16:20 “And they went forth preaching everywhere, and the Lord working with them, confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” The miracles were the confirmation that the disciples’ message was authentic and the absolute truth.
3. To draw people to Christ.
This is a principle that the Holy Spirit has taught me and Aimee during the past decade in ministry. After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the Bible clearly speaks for itself in John 11:45, “…many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.” What was the driving force in the Lord’s ministry that compelled the multitudes to put their faith in Him? It was the undeniable miracles that God, through the power of the Holy Ghost, worked in His life.
4. To put your faith in the power of God.
The apostle Paul followed the exact same principle. Listen to his words: “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5). Both the apostle Paul and the Lord Jesus Christ manifested the power of God through signs, wonders and miracles so people could not only hear about God, but actually see Him in action through His servants. Paul makes a strong point and declares that our faith should not be in man’s wisdom, but in God’s power.
5. To experience church growth.
The Church in the book of Acts grew explosively as a result of miracles. On the day of Pentecost, after the believers were filled with the Holy Ghost, God performed an awesome miracle and supernaturally allowed the apostles and believers to speak in the languages of other nations without having any previous training in those languages. That miracle pulled the multitudes together and opened a door for Peter to deliver the Gospel to them. After Peter preached under this strong anointing, the Bible says in Acts 2:37-38, 41: “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” Miracles of healing caused souls to be swept into the kingdom of God.
