Who are We Called to?
We are called to the same kinds of people that came to David when he ran for his life from King Saul to the caves of Adullam, as we read in 1 Samuel 22:2: “And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.” I will expand on each one of these conditions so that you can gain a better grasp of this Scripture.
Those that are in Distress
“Distress” means “a narrow place, confinement or disability; anguish; distress.” This refers to the people that are restricted in some way. These are people who are ready to break free from all of their chains and walk out their destiny in God. Aimee and I had to go through this exact same process. We understand what it means to suffer limitations. If you can relate to what I am saying, you are not alone. We understand, but we also know the steps you need to take to shake the limits off. You can burst forth from the bandages that have been forced on you and experience God’s incredible plan for your life.
Everyone that was in debt
This particular group that came to David had poor credit and were struggling financially. We also know what it means to struggle financially. There were times we were stressed out and we got mad at God because we did not have the money that we desired. We understand what it is to strain, trying to make ends meet. Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart of a man. God does not look at you for what you have or don’t have. As long as you are willing to surrender all to Jesus, God will blow you away at what He will accomplish in your life. God has an unbelievable plan for your finances. The word of God in Deuteronomy 8:18 says, “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” We were tithers, like you are, yet we still struggled. But there came a time when God began to bring us out, one step at a time. God is about to bring you out, too.
Every one that was Discontented
The word “discontented” means “angry, bitter, heavy and chafed.” The people in this group are the ones who have been hurt and wounded. These are people who are deeply dissatisfied and desire to have God’s best. If the Spirit of God is speaking to you through what I am saying, your entire situation is about to change. You are on your way out of the hurt and pain you find yourself in. God is going to give you the grace to forgive everyone that has hurt you so you can move on to better things in Him.
The people that I have described to you came to David in the caves of Adullam. The Scripture goes on to say that these men “…gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them…” These were the men that became David’s mighty army. They submitted themselves to David, first and foremost, because he was anointed by the Holy Ghost. Second, they allied themselves with David because he could relate to them; he understood and felt their pain. Third, they bonded with David because he believed in them and gave them opportunities when no one else did. The anointing of the Holy Ghost that rested on David’s life so affected these men that they accomplished great exploits in God. When David became King, every single one of these men were promoted and were used powerfully by God to defend and protect God’s people.
The same way David enlisted those of his day, Jesus applied the same principle. Christ did not go to the University of Jerusalem when he was ready to choose men that would later become pillars in the church. He went by the Sea of Galilee and found ignorant fishermen who were looking for something more and tax collectors that were disowned and hated by their countrymen. These men were so impacted and transformed by the Lord that the Scriptures say in Acts 4:13: “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” You are in good company and you are not alone. The transformation was so real in the apostles’ lives that their enemies were forced to confess about them in Acts 17:6: “…These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also…” Jesus took these ordinary men and molded them into world-shakers.
